Pediatric Wrist Brace

Sometimes kids play rough, sometimes they fall, sometimes they twist and contort in unimaginable ways.  Sometimes they hurt their wrists.  Don’t worry, they get better.  But while they are on the mend a wrist brace can help provide support and comfort to a sensitive wrist.

A wrist brace will limit the motion of the wrist joint and also provide a reminder to take it easy.  You can order a sized or a universal product.  Children who need wrist braces should be fit with products designed for children not “adult extra small” sizes.  A pediatric wrist brace will be easy for a child to wear, easy to clean, and comfortable.

Keep in mind that the wrist brace will get into whatever your kid gets into.  So remember to wash it regularly.  Wash it in the sink with a mild detergent and let it air dry.

Pediatric Knee Braces

September 14, 2014 @ 9:00 am posted by Brace and Support Help

pediatric knee brace

Children who need knee braces, need pediatric knee braces.  Many times healthcare practitioners will try to fit a child with an adult extra small brace and hope for the best.  Why?  Because most brace manufacturers do not have a pediatric line of braces.  And health care professionals who fit braces often have relationships with a specific manufacturer, so they either don’t have access to pediatric products or they don’t know where to get them.

So which knee brace is right for your child?  If it’s just a mild injury a knee sleeve will probably do just fine.  A knee sleeve will provide warmth and compression and generally speaking make a hurt knee feel better.  If the knee cap is the problem, then a knee brace with straps and some type of buttress will be required (like the brace pictured above).  The buttress helps position the knee cap by applying gentle pressure, and the straps help keep the knee brace in place.  If the knee is unstable then a knee brace with hinges is the way to go.  If you’re not sure, forward this post to your doctor and ask for their opinion.

These knee braces should be washed regularly and kept clean.  Think of the brace like a pair of socks.  It’s going to collect sweat, dirt, and whatever else your kid gets into.  Hand wash the knee brace in the kitchen sink with a mild soap.  Let it air dry.  The vast majority of skin problems (rashes) associated with knee braces come from wearing unclean braces.  This it is true with adults and children.

Pediatric Ankle Brace

January 16, 2014 @ 1:16 pm posted by Brace and Support Help

Pediatric Ankle BraceSo your little guy twisted his ankle?  Is it a sprain?

Pediatric ankle sprain symptoms can include:

  1. Ankle pain, bruising, and swelling
  2. The pain gets worse when your child walks, stands, presses on the ankle, or moves the ankle
  3. Can’t move the ankle without pain.
  4. If there was an audible pop (ouch!)

Not every child with a sprained ankle has to go to the doctor. However, you should at least call your doctor if there are any of the following:

  1. Can’t move the ankle
  2. Can’t put weight on the ankle
  3. Pain over the bony part of the ankle
  4. Can’t walk without pain
  5. Pain not relieved by ice, pain relief medication, bracing, and elevation
  6. Numbness in the leg, foot, or ankle
  7. Pain that does not improve in 5-7 days
  8. If you are uncertain about the injury

Some kids will do just fine with rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

  1. Rest – get your kid off his feet.
  2. Ice – ice for ten minutes at a time
  3. Compression – A pediatric ankle brace can help a lot
  4. Elevation – raise the ankle while icing it (prop it up with a pillow)

Many orthopedic clinics will try to fit children with adult extra small sized braces, splints, and walking boots.  They do this either to reduce inventory or because they don’t know where to order pediatric-sized braces from.

If your little one is about to come out of a cast, or if you’re looking for an alternative to a foot cast, the pediatric walking boot could be the answer.  If you’re not sure forward this post to your doctor.
